Holiday Traditions at Home
We typically split the holidays between Nancy and Marty’s home for Thanksgiving and Christmas morning at Wendy and Doug’s! Christmas morning, especially, is a holiday tradition set in stone–or perhaps in smoked salmon. Wendy and Doug host a fabulous brunch featuring Doug’s famous smoked salmon with bagels, fixings, and Bloody Marys (a must-have). It’s relaxed, delicious, and the perfect start to Christmas Day.
Our Favorite Festive Holiday Outings
One holiday outing that’s non-negotiable? Seeing the lights! Marty’s favorite tradition is touring neighborhoods with dazzling displays, and we always make a stop at Cheekwood’s magical holiday lights. Studio Tenn’s “Million Dollar Quartet Christmas” is also on our December calendar—what could be better than holiday tunes and incredible performances?
For something extra festive, we never miss Dickens of a Christmas in downtown Franklin. There’s something about stepping back in time, strolling the square, and snapping a photo by the grand Christmas tree that makes the season feel complete.
A Touch of Holiday Nostalgia
We have a family Christmas Village, with twinkling Department 56 collectibles, that holds a special place in our hearts—and a funny backstory! Years ago, Marty had the idea to collect these charming pieces, but Nancy wasn’t convinced. Undeterred, the collection grew anyway, with each piece gifted to our granddaughter. Now, every year, we transform about 20 pieces into a magical scene. It’s one of our favorite ways to kick off the season, and yes, Nancy admits they were a great idea after all.
